Hydrogen will move mountains – and we move hydrogen

Our hydrogen network is set to stretch from the North Sea to southern Germany and is optimally integrated into the European transmission system with its many import routes.

Our existing natural gas pipelines are fundamental on the road to climate neutrality. They already connect sources of supply with large energy consumers and storage facilities and can be gradually converted to hydrogen. With manageable efforts for conversion and new construction, it will be possible to utilise existing infrastructure quickly and cost-effectively.

We are aiming to create a nationwide, publicly accessible hydrogen network in Germany, whereby we hope to develop a hydrogen market with a large number of suppliers and consumers. In just the next few years, we will provide you with access to the first regional hydrogen network in Germany. And customers outside of the corridors shown will also be able to access the supply, for example via distribution networks or selected newly built pipelines.

Lower Rhine and the GET H2 Nukleus

The Lower Rhine and Western Ruhr regions are on a journey towards decarbonisation. Many of the power plants and industrial sites there want to use hydrogen in the coming years to convert energy-intensive processes. The required quantities of hydrogen will reach the region via the Netherlands and the GET H2 network from Wilhelmshaven.

With the “GET H2 Nukleus” project, OGE has teamed up with partners – bp, Evonik, Nowega, Thyssen­gas, thyssen­krupp Steel Europe, RWE Gas Storage West and RWE Generation – to build a 130-kilometre-long hydrogen network with non-discriminatory access and transparent prices. The network will connect the hydrogen generation site or the point of import from the Netherlands with industrial consumers in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, with interconnected storage facilities helping to structure hydrogen demand. Ruhr area

The Ruhr area has a long tradition as a mining and industrial centre. It is a major industrial conurbation and is densely populated. Yet the region is changing and has a growing need for climate-neutral energy. In OGE’s core region, we have a close-knit pipeline infrastructure that offers an excellent starting point for the construction of a hydrogen infrastructure in the near future. OGE is therefore already working on specific hydrogen value chains, such as Zukunft RuH2r.

OGE is also involved in various initiatives in this region to help shape the ramp-up of the hydrogen market: These include the h2-netzwerk-ruhr e. V. and the Hy.Region.Rhein.Ruhr e. V. zu, among others.

Rhenish mining area and Middle Rhine

The region is facing major challenges due to the imminent phase-out of lignite-fired power generation and the decarbonisation of the chemical and industrial sites that have traditionally been strongly represented in the Rhenish mining area. Hydrogen will play an important role in solving these challenges. OGE is an important player in the Rhenish mining area making a significant contribution to the development of the hydrogen core network through the construction of new pipelines and the conversion of existing natural gas tranmission pipelines. We are providing targeted support for the hydrogen ramp-up in local networks such as the Hydrogen Hub Aachen, HyPipCo Cologne, Chemcologne and IN4climate Rheinisches Revier.

Rhine-Main

The region between the Rhine and Main rivers is home to numerous companies from various industries along the different value chains. The chemical industry in particular, with its energy-intensive processes, requires sustainable solutions for the use of future-proof energy carriers.

OGE is working with regional energy suppliers on the design for the new hydrogen regional network “Rh2ein-Main Connect” in order to supply the metropolitan region with climate-neutral hydrogen through connections to the H2 core network. For more information, go to: Rh2ein-Main Connect

Saarland

Saarland has already become established as a model region for hydrogen. Here, the green transformation is being driven forward in close cooperation with various stakeholders from industry, municipal utilities and research institutions. The region’s industrial tradition offers a solid foundation for the integration of hydrogen into existing production processes. Saarland’s steel industry in particular is an important consumer of hydrogen and is contributing to its decarbonisation.

Thanks to the cross-border cooperation with France, the region will be able to import hydrogen through import projects like the H2med project.

Bayern

The goals of Bavaria’s hydrogen strategy are high-tech, innovation and climate protection. To this end, OGE will install an east-west connection from the Czech border to the Rhine-Neckar triangle on the basis of the existing natural gas infrastructure and convert a pipeline leg to transport hydrogen to the important industrial centres in Ingolstadt and Regensburg.

OGE is a member of the “Zentrum Wasserstoff.Bayern (H2.B)” here, in which 350 partners from business, academia and politics have joined forces to support the hydrogen ramp-up.

This map is a graphic representation of the hydrogen core network application submitted to the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) by FNB Gas e. V. on 22 July 2024. The application has to be approved by 22 September 2024. Within this time period BNetzA will consult this application with the public. Changes to the planned pipeline routes can still be made during this stage, and the map material will be updated accordingly in September 2024.

Seizing the initiative – for the hydrogen market ramp-up

Climate protection goals are most efficiently achieved with renewable electricity and green gases, especially hydrogen because it is carbon-free and can be used in all areas: households, small commercial enterprises, industry, transport, power generation and for the storage of renewable electricity.
We at OGE are working to create a Germany-wide hydrogen infrastructure, supporting the hydrogen market ramp-up in cross-value chain initiatives.

In this cross-value-added cooperation with RWE, the creation of a hydrogen infrastructure in Germany in XXL format is to be driven forward. The aim is to supply consumers in the south and west of Germany with hydrogen from the north. In addition to hydrogen production, import routes for green hydrogen are also planned.

GET H2 Nucleus

The GET H2 partners BP, Evonik, Nowega, OGE and RWE Generation want to jointly build the first publicly accessible hydrogen infrastructure. The GET H2 Nucleus project combines the production of green hydrogen with industrial customers in Lower Saxony and NRW. The approximately 130-kilometer network from Lingen to Gelsenkirchen will be the first H2 network in the regulated area with non-discriminatory access and transparent prices.

Research for the best infrastructure. The central fundamentals for the reliable operation of a climate-neutral hydrogen infrastructure are now being further deepened with a view to the future - RWE, Nowega, Rosen, Evonik, the University of Potsdam, the DVGW, Adlares, Meter-Q Solutions and OGE are working on practical solutions for the transport of hydrogen.
